Mountain Life, A Snow Day

You would think, living in the mountains with an average annual snowfall of over 400 inches of snow, that we would get a lot of "snow days", stuck at home, roads closed, no place to go.  Actually, it's fairly rare! But yesterday we had freezing rain in the forecast so I, mentally checked out, spent the day in the house doing laundry, binged watched some Nicholas Cage movies on Netflix (don't judge me man), baked brownies, played with Mae.

Unfortunately, today is a REAL "snow day".  The freezing rain, which came down like a sand, accumulated to about 8 inches or more, and I-90 is closed in both directions for today AND tonight.   Slides and debris have covered parts of the highway and conditions are too dangerous for crews to be out clearing. Trees are across the road and more are falling. It's going to be a long time before they get the highway cleaned up and open!  Locals are saying it's the worst ice storm they can remember in over 40 years of pass living.

What to do?? Well, Netflix is out right?  I mean how many bad movies can you stand?  (A lot actually).  I'm not making any more brownies, cakes or pie.  Maybe I will make an apple crisp though.  I've already done yoga and a weight work out....I've been out walking Mae twice .  I think we should venture up the mountain, do a little skinning, take a few turns.

What does Mae think?  She might have the right idea....

  1. Nicholas Cage haha haha. On one hand I laugh on the other hand I say "hmmmm I actually did enjoy a few of his movies" lol. I'm a big rundown movie person. I will watch just about anything that is coming on, the wife hates it. Now that we have streaming services, look out people, bad movie night every night of the week lol.

  2. Some of them are so bad they are funny! that's what I enjoy! But there's usually some action at least!

  3. Gotta find some indoor activities to burn off that energy. On cold/rainy days when we keep the kids inside I wrestle with my 8yo and do gymnastics with my 4yo. Burns off their energy so they don't get antsy. We are all big kids at heart right :)

  4. Oh man huge running day on Sat. I got to run with the fast kids. I actually held my own pretty good. Such an eye opener lol

  5. Ha ha! So...how old are these fast "kids"? Sounds fun! Were you exhausted?

  6. Haha I use "kids" loosely. One guy is turning 40 and the other guy is early 30's. Age is just a number right

  7. yes! Except when your number is much higher than someone else's! :) I don't always recover the way those lower number people do! They don't usually have to worry about old hips and shoulders, lol! Sounds like you had a great run Saturday! nice!

  8. Trust me, I get that too. Wrestling with my 8yo has become a lot tougher and I have to take breaks lol.

Question, are you ever racing again or just enjoying the freedom??

  9. My husband got a black eye once wrestling with our son! Nothing like a head butt from a 4 yr old! Lol!
You know, I was just thinking about that this morning! I've never been much for racing or chasing a PR . Running was always part of an overall fitness program to support something else, climbing for instance. But when I stopped climbing I started running more to fill up my time. presently, I would like to get back a level of running fitness that would allow me to enjoy my runs (they are all work right now!) and would also be good enough for the random 5k. I have a friend who is approaching 70 and he runs does weights and yoga several times a week! You just have to maintain everything! Lol! that said there are a billion things I want to do, surf, paddle, continue to snowboard etc. So it's really a big juggling act! So bottom line is that I need to have a base fitness level to enjoy all the other things I want to do and yes, enjoying the freedom to not say "I'm a climber" or I'm a cyclist/a triathlete /runner...but to just be ABLE to continue to do active things. It sounds lame but believe me, I could give you a list of my friends and neighbors and their knee and hip and shoulder surgeries!! My husband (who is an incredible athlete) and I are always talking about the line you have to walk to stay healthy enough to enjoy and active life, without going over the edge , getting an injury and being sidelined indefinitely. Once you lose your fitness base at our age (mid 50's) it's so darned elusive!!!
oh this is a long reply...should have just made it a post!!! :)

  10. Haha that is a long reply. I think we can all speak to fitness level and how it's needed for so much. I've had that conversation so many times when we had our middle son, I wanted to be healthy enough to run around with him at the park. Now running became a bit of an obsession but it does help keep me for for anything the kids want to do. I think you have a very valid point.

  14. Well that's a good way to look at it. You know what though? I think on this ,blogspot, you may be the only one! I also publish it on a wordpress account and that does get a few more. I just enjoyed YOUR post! Wow, the Superstitions! I always wanted to go there just because the name is so intriguing! Looks like a great place and a good run. Fun to get out and just have a good time! My favorite thing about running trails or being outside is really just wandering around in the woods! With my dog! No time frame, no plan. it reminds me of being a kid, picking berries, taking different trails. So much fun!

  15. What?!?! What's the WordPress account??

Yes, I love the adventuring. When we were in Mexico I took like 2 hours to run 4 miles lol. I was looking through the water for sea shells, looking for crabs, it was the best. Sunday took me back to that type of adventuring.
